about bali

Tanah lot temple

Tanah Lot, located on the west coast of Bali, in Beraban village in Tabanan regency, is one of the most popular sites in Bali. Tanah Lot means the ancient land as well as the land to the south.

This temple was built in the 15th century by the priest Pedanda Bahu Rawuh or Danghyang Nirartha from Majapahit Kingdom. During his voyage along the south coast he caught sight of a rock island and rested there. Some fishermen noticed him and invited him to stay at their hut. Nirartha refused, saying he preferred to spend the night on the little island. That evening, he talked to the fishermen and advised them to build a shrine on the rock. Nirartha felt it would be a holy and appropriate place to worship God.

Built on a small cape, Tanah Lot is only accessible at low tide. During high tide, the rock appears as a large ship at sea. There are several small and big shrines nearby, the biggest one is Pekendungan Temple. There is a spring considered sacred not far from this temple.

Poisonous snakes inhabit the nearby caves as the guardian of the temple. The perfect time to visit Tanah Lot is at the sunset when the golden red sky surrounds the temple and the wave crashes into the rocks.

Though Tanah Lot is a small sanctuary, it is related to several sea temples on the south coast of Bali: Pura Sakenan, Pura Uluwatu, Pura Rambut Siwi and Pura Petitenget. All these temples are related to the primary mountain sanctuaries: Besakih at Mount Agung, Pura Batur at Batur and Pura Luhur at Mount Batukaru.

Uluwatu temple

There is a story about a Hindu priest from Java called "Dang Hyang Nirartha" or "Peranda Wawu", full of mystical episodes since his arrival until his Disappearance in Bali. One of Hindu teaching is the same as other religion that is concerning the world after death or the "here after world" This world is contrasted into two polarization such as Eden garden and hell. For those devotees, a promise of all goodness and happiness are there roomates is called "heaven" in the tradition of Hinduism in Bali it is said that the "heaven" is undescribed by words, and undepicted with picture. Where is an absolute truth, and the body is embraced into it, so it only exist "enlightenment". But one can not enter heaven with the body except their worldly holy spirit when he / she had completed during the life duties and behaved as Indicated by religious teaching.
The other way one can reach heaven by the way called "moksha". It is not quiet clear what is actually meant by the word "moksha". Many Assumptions arose. One thought it is a body sublimation, that one who has his reach stage of moksha disappeared in the world living without his / her physical body. This stage can only be reached with a severe body control on senses while developing knowledge by meditation or hermitage. Others thought that when a person dead, their spirits Become one with the absolute being, and will not experience rebirth (Sanskrit: samsara) anymore. Since life is basically a punishment of sins and misdeeds of their past life (Sanskrit: Punarbawa). So, actually based on the last teaching human being during his life is stirred to do the good thing.
Dang Hyang Nirarta is believed the one that have reached such stage, and he accomplished his moksha on a spot of land roomates is believed to be the sacred place. In this sacred place was built a temple then called Ulu Watu. That was why the place has been Considered a very special place by the king in the past. It is not only Uluwatu temple that is associated with Dang Hyang Nirarta, but many such as Ponjok stone temple at North West Bali, Hair Siwi in State and Sila published some regency in East Bali. It is probably the claim from the Hindu priest in the past that their role in the society was Unquestionable.

Kintamani borders on Batur/ Kalanganyar Village. There is a market up the road to the north, which is busy every three days on Hari Paseh. It is interesting to see all kinds of products from surrounding mountain farms such as oranges, corns, and vegetables.

Goa gajah (elephant cave temple)

At the façade of the cave is a relief of various menacing creatures and demons carved right into the rock at the cave entrance. The primary figure was once thought to be an elephant, hence the nickname Elephant Cave. The site is mentioned in the Javanese poem Desawarnana written in 1365. An extensive bathing place on the site was not excavated until the 1950s.[2] These appear to have been built to ward off evil spirits.

Tampak siring temple (holy spring water temple)

Tirta Empul Temple is built at Tampak Siring around the sacred spring which is believed to have magical curative powers. It is said that the God Indra created the spring when he pierced the earth to build the Amerta, the elixir of immortality, with which he revived his forces whom were poisoned by Mayadanawa.

Over 1000 years old, the temple and its two bathing places have been used by the people for good health and prosperity because of the spring water's healing powers. Regular ceremonies are held for purification, especially pregnant women and those who have endured a long sickness. On the full moon of the fourth month each year, the villagers from nearby Manukaya take a sacred stone to be cleansed at Tirta Empul.

On the hill above the sacred spring is the Government Palace, built in 1954 which was once a resting home for Dutch officials. It was also the former President Soekarno’s residence during his frequent trips to the island.

On the south of Tirta Empul, near Mount Kawi, there is Mengening Temple. There is a relation between these three places. Mengening Temple also has a spring of pure water. It is considered as the memorial temple of King Udayana.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Gunung kawi temple

Gunung Kawi is a very special and inspiring Bali temple located near Tampak Siring, Gianyar Regency, Bali. The location is 35 km from Denpasar, city, 50 km from Kuta, and 68 km from Nusa Dua. Gunung Kawi is two rows of ancient royal tombs on the banks of the Pakerisan River deep in a ravine overlooked by terraced rice-fields. The holy Pakersian River flows through the centre of Gunung Kawi cutting the site into two separate sections with a bridge to connect one side to the other. It is believed the holy waters of the Pakerisan sanctify Gunung Kawi, and the beauty of the place evokes a relaxing and peaceful atmosphere.

The Gunung Kawi does have an interesting history. Inscriptions over each Candi approximate the date of construction to be in the 11th C. It is believed that each temple served as a memorial to a deified royalty principally because they are shaped like the burial towers, or Candi’s, found throughout Central Java. But in Java they are free standing whilst those found at Gunung Kawi are actually hewn relief's in solid rock.

So who was monumentalized at Gunung Kawi? Some archaeologists believed that was the son of Udayana, either king Marakata Pangkajasthana or Anak Wungsu. The rule of Marakata is not known much and there is not many record about his government. Others are of the opinion that the most probable being that the main group of five candi were built for King Udayana, his queen Gunapriya, a elder son and the youngest, Anak Wungsu. Anak Wungsu is believed to have become a hermit after giving up his reign over the kingdom (1050-1077 AD). However, a third theory states the whole complex is in fact a mausoleum for Anak Wungsu, his wives and favorite concubines.

The ten Candi: On the east side of the river are situated five candi which constitute the main group in this complex. Across the bridge are four candi on the west side. The remaining candi at the southern end is often referred to as the ‘tenth tomb’. At the bottom of the stairway and to your right-hand side through a small field (about one kilometer) is where the tenth tomb is located.

The legend to this amazing place is intriguing. It is believed that the mythical giant Kebo Iwo carved out all of the ancient tombs in one night with his fingernails.

There are 3 temples which so called the name as Gunung Kawi in Bali those are Gunung Kawi in Sebatu countryside, Gunung Kawi Temple in Keliki countryside and Gunung Kawi Temple in Babitra countryside.

Behind the small temple you can find a couple of meditation caves, which indicates that this is a pre-Hindu place where monks and pilgrims came together to meditate.

Taman Ayun Temple was renovated in 1937. The grassy area of the outermost courtyard, the fine array of roofs (merus) and pavilions in the inner courtyard, and its well-kept appearance make it one of the most beautiful temples in Bali.

The temple complex consists of three ground areas. In the outermost court is Bale Wantilan which is used for all events, religious ceremonies, dance performances or cock fighting. To the west, there is a decorative fountain called Padma Sana. In the innermost court, surrounded by a small pond, there are 29 buildings which function as places for the gods and goddesses, called Bale Pelik with beautiful carvings, interesting relics and statues of the nine gods, Dewa Nawa Sanga. The whole complex of temple symbolizes the great Mandhara Mountain turning in a sea of milk.

The Bali tours to Pura Ulun Danu Bratan has given most visitors a rather serene feeling that calms their spirits.
"Cool" temperature always covers the area of the Ulun Danu Bratan, Hindu temple, since it is located around the mountainous area at the altitude of some 1200 meters above sea level. It's so high up the hills that clouds form just over the lake.

Ulun Danu Bratan temple is one of the most natural beauty highland shrines in Bali. Ulun Danu Bratan, is one of the two most important Bali temple, the other being Pura Ulun Danu Batur, or Pura Bat. You might have had the thought about is Pura Ulun Danu Bratan same as Batur? - but it isn't - only some parts of the temples (and most photographed)

The temple complex is located on the shores of Danau Bratan (Lake Bratan) in the mountains. Water temples serve the entire region in the outflow area; downstream there are many smaller water temples that are specific to each irrigation association (subak).

Pura ulun danu bratan temple lake
The name Ulun Danu, literally means "the beginning of the lake" but this might not to claim that the site is the beginning of a lake. It tends to indicate that everything that exists around the lake will have the orientation to the temple site, and cleanliness around the area must be continuously kept.

According to the ancient manuscript of the Mengwi Kingdom, Pura Ulun Danu Bratan was built in 1633 by I Gusti Agung Putu, the King of Mengwi, the same person who later built Pura Taman Ayun. Inside the main gate, you come upon a large stupa with carvings, then the main temple Pura Teratai Bang. Then there's a smaller temple, Pura Dalem Purwa, dedicated to the goddess of food and drinks.

Ulun danu temple
On the shore of the lake are two multi-tiered merus. The bigger, 11-tier meru is the abode of the god of Gunung Mangu. Gunung Mangu is said to be the abode of Wisnu, hence the meru is dedicated to Wisnu. The other shrine is that of Lingga Petak. It is smaller and further away in the lake. This shrine, with a three-tier meru, dedicated to Shiva.

Ulun Danu Bratan Temple is consist of 4 units each dedicated to spirit of Lingga Petak, and temporary abode gods. It looks that the Pura Ulun Danu Bratan temple symbolizes the nature of surrounding as the respects of nature greatness, since the location is surrounded by peaks of Bali mountain chain such as the east is Mt. Mangu, to the south is Mt. Teratai Bang, and to the west is Mt. Pohan.

Besakih temple

Besakih Temple, over 900 meters up the slopes of Mount Agung, is the largest and most sacred Hindu temples in the island. It is named after Naga Besukian, the dragon god thought by pre-Hindu Balinese to inhabit Mount Agung, the highest mountain in Bali. Besakih Temple has been regarded as a central, holy temple for the entire island since the Gelgel Dynasty of the 15th century. Today, it is referred by all Balinese as the mother temple of Bali.

Over a thousand years and more, Besakih Temple was extended to the present complex of about 30 temples. There are three main temples within Besakih Temple; Pura Penataran Agung, dedicated to Sang Hyang Widi Wasa. Inside the main courtyard stands the three-seated shrine enthroning the Trisakti, the trinity of Brahma, Visnu and Siwa. During festivals the shrines are wrapped in colored cloth symbolic of the deities.

The other two main temples are Pura Kiduling Kreteg, dedicated to Brahma; and Pura Batu Madeg, dedicated to Wisnu.

For Balinese people, a visit to the temple sanctuaries at Besakih is a special pilgrimage. Each temple has its own anniversary ceremony (Odalan) and on the full moon (Kedasa) the entire compound of Besakih commemorates the visit of the gods with an enormous mass of visiting pilgrims.

Goa lawah (bat cave temple)

Goa Lawah is one of the most sacred temples in Bali, built by the high priest ‘Empu Kuturan’ in 11th century. The center of the temple is built around a natural cave inhabited by thousands of bats hanging down and flying around, as well as holy python snakes. Legend has it that this cave is a dwelling place of Naga Basuki, the mythical and sacred dragon of the Mount Agung as well as the guardian of Besakih temple.

This temple is located in Wates village, on the southeast coast of Bali, west of Candidasa, approximately 50km east of Denpasar. It is considered as one of the important temples in the island. Balinese people come to this temple with offerings to complete a cremation ceremony, called Nyegara Gunung ceremony.

This temple was used as a place of worship by the King of Klungkung in the 17th century. Goa Lawah was also used to test the people who found guilty of breaking the law.

Around the 17th century, a dispute happened between the King of Mengwi's sons, I Gusti Ngurah Made Agung and I Gusti Ketut Agung. I Gusti Ketut Agung was not accepted as the descendant of the King of Mengwi. He was sent to be tested by the King of Klungkung who was respected as the highest king. The King of Klungkung asked I Gusti Ketut Agung to enter Goa Lawah. If he came out alive he would be acknowledged as a descendant. I Gusti Ketut Agung accepted the sentence, entered the cave and finally came out in Besakih.

Based on the King of Klungkung’s decision, he then was acknowledged as a part of the King of Mengwi's family. He was known as I Gusti Ketut Agung Besakih when he became a king. It is said that he became deaf because of entering the cave.

Barong dance

Barong is probably the most well known dance. It is also another story telling dance, narrating the fight between good and evil. This dance is the classic example of Balinese way of acting out mythology, resulting in myth and history being blended into one reality.

The story is about Rangda, the mother of Erlangga, the King of Bali in the 10th century, who was condemned by Erlangga's father because she practiced black magic. After she became a widow, she summoned all the evil spirits in the jungle, the leaks and the demons, to come after Erlangga. A fight occurred, but she and her black magic troops were too strong that Erlangga had to ask for the help of Barong, the magical protector of Balinese villages. Barong came with Erlangga's soldiers, and fight ensued. Rangda casted a spell that made Erlangga soldiers all wanted to kill themselves, pointing their poisoned keris into their own stomachs and chests. Barong casted a spell that turned their body resistant to the sharp keris. At the end, Barong won, and Rangda ran away.

The masks of Barong and Rangda are considered sacred items. Before they are brought out, a priest must be present to offer blessings by sprinkling them with holy water taken from Mount Agung, and offerrings must be presented.

The are several versions of the Barong Dance during Galungan Kuningan festivals. There are Barong Ket, Barong Asu (Dog Barong), Barong Macan (Tiger Barong), Barong Gajah (Elephant Barong), Barong Bangkal (Pig Barong) - wanders from door to door to cleanse the territory of evil influences.

Kecak dance

Kecak dance is perhaps the most stunning of all the Balinese dances. The story line of the dance is taken from the Hindu epic Ramayana that tells the story of Prince Rama and his rescue of Princess Sinta, who has been kidnapped by the evil King Rahwana. Prince Rama was able to rescue Princess Sinta with the help of the white monkey armies.

The word Kecak is derived from the "chak-chak" sounds, the chanting 'monkey' chorus. Unlike other dances, there is no gamelan orchestra accompanying it. Instead, a group of over 150 bare-chested men make an amazing synchronized chak-chak sound while swaying their bodies and waving their hands, acting as the various monkey armies that are featured in the story.

Bali cremation

Ngaben, or Cremation Ceremony, is the ritual performed in Bali to send the deceased to the next life. The body of the deceased will be placed as if sleeping, and the family will continue to treat the deceased as sleeping. No tears are shed, because the deceased is only temporarily not present and will reincarnate or find his final rest in Moksha (freeing from the reincarnation and death cycle).
The proper day of the ceremony is always a matter of consulting a specialist on ceremony days. On the day of the ceremony, the body of the deceased is placed inside a coffin. This coffin is placed inside a sarcophagus resembling a buffalo (Lembu) or in a temple structure (Wadah) made of paper and wood. The buffalo or temple structure will be carried to the cremation site in a procession. The procession is not walking in a straight line. This is to confuse bad spirits and keep them away from the deceased.
The climax of Ngaben is the burning of the whole structure, together with the body of the deceased. The fire is necessary to free the spirit from the body and enable reincarnation.
Ngaben is not always immediately performed. For higher caste members it is normal to perform the ritual within 3 days. For lower caste members the deceased are buried first and later, often in a group ceremony for the whole village, cremated.
